Why Have Metal Roofs & Walls?

Whether you’ve noticed them on large commercial buildings or small businesses, metal roofs are a popular roofing material. A 2021 state of the industry report noted that commercial roofing contractors indicated that metal roofing was the second most popular roofing system. Research by Techanvio shows that the metal roof market is expected to grow by $2.67 billion from 2021 to 2026. Of course, there are many obvious reasons for this incredible increase in metal roofs: they’re durable, offer exceptional protection, have low maintenance, and are energy-efficient. Since metal roofs are designed to last 50 years, many business owners find them to be a sound financial investment. Additionally, metal roofs are a very safe choice, considering they will not spark and ignite into flames during a wildfire or lightning strike. Plus, there’s an array of different textures, colors, and finishes to choose from!

There are many reasons to choose metal roofing over other materials – such as asphalt shingles, tiles, or concrete. However, we know that it’s not always the best material for every customer. That’s why we’ve put together this list of pros and cons to help you decide whether or not a metal roof is a good match for your roofing project!

Benefits

There are many benefits of metal roofs, which is why there’s been such a growth in metal roofs in the U.S. over the past decade. Here are a few key reasons to consider installing a metal roofing system.

Long-Lasting

Depending on what material you use, metal roofs can last anywhere from 40 to 70 years, with many manufacturers offering 30 to 50-year warranties! Traditional asphalt roofing materials have an estimated life expectancy of roughly 12 to 20 years. Metal roofs are also incredibly durable and have proven to withstand gusts of up to 140 miles per hour! They also will not corrode or crack (thanks to rust-proof coatings) and may be impact-resistant. Due to the durability of metal roofing systems, they also don’t require the more frequent – and often costly – maintenance that other roofing materials require. However, we do still recommend periodic inspections to ensure repairs are required.

Environmentally-Friendly

Did you know that not only are metal roofs made with 25-95% recycled content, but depending on the material used, they’re also 100% recycled at the end of their life as a roof? That’s one environmentally-friendly roof! In contrast, most other types of shingles end up in landfills. They acccount for up to 20 billion pounds of waste per year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Metal roofing systems are also great for business owners who are interested in investing in other eco-conscious initiatives for their building – such as solar panels and systems for harvesting rainwater.

Energy-Efficient

While metal roofing materials can be more expensive up front, it can result in a 10-25% reduction in cooling costs. Due to the fact that they reflect the sun’s UV and infrared light rays. That’s a lot of savings in monthly cooling and heating costs. Additionally, some metal roofing materials are coated with special reflective pigments in order to further minimize the impact of a hot summer’s day on your business.

Stylish

Metal roofing comes in many different types, allowing for lots of customization of looks and styles! Asphalt offers around 15-20 color choices, while metal roofing comes in 100+ different colors, including standard, premium, and custom hues. The various types of metal roofing materials are also bountiful – tin, zinc, aluminum, copper, and steel – and come in the form of corrugated metals, slate roofs, and tile roofs. That means you’ll have plenty of options to choose from when it comes to your new roof!

Cons

While there are many benefits to choosing a metal roof, that doesn’t mean they’re the right fit for everyone. The following are some things to consider when choosing a metal roof.

Expenses

Although metal roofs will last quite a bit longer than other roofing materials, they can also be more expensive. Additionally, the installation labor is also more expensive because of the specialized training, knowledge, tools, and equipment needed. Investing in a metal roof only makes sense if you plan to remain in your business long enough to enjoy the cost benefits.

Easily Dented

Although metal roofs are incredibly durable, they can still be dented by things like extreme weather (i.e.: hail) or falling branches. Some metals – such as aluminum and copper – are softer and more prone to denting, as opposed to steel.

Noisy

Rain on a tin roof may sound heavenly to some; however, it’s worth noting that metal can often be noisier than other roofing materials. (Especially during heavy rain or thunderstorm!) Additional layers of solid sheathing or insulation will usually minimize the noise level. But these additional layers do come at an additional cost to your overall roofing project.

Performance

If you have a low-slope roof, you run the risk of water accumulating on your roof. Which can cause serious damage such as rust and leaks. Something else worth considering is that metal roofing panels are designed to expand and contract as they warm and cool. As a result, the fasteners may degrade or dislodge over time and need to be replaced.
